What types of stockings are available

A common mistake is choosing stockings only by clothing color. Match color to skin tone and footwear: nude shades visually lengthen the leg, black creates a strong graphic contrast.

Stockings made from smooth yarns give an even surface and a soft sheen; matte models better conceal skin texture. Some constructions have reinforced toes and heels — this extends service life when worn often. For stay-up models the essential factor is the quality of the silicone band: a good band adheres evenly and doesn’t leave marks. In decorative variants, the strength of patterns and seams matters: very delicate knits wear out faster during use.

Length affects fit and compatibility with footwear; denier affects appearance and durability; fastening method determines comfort in motion. There are models with reinforced heel and toe for active wear, and delicate sheer options for special occasions. Some stockings feature a decorative back seam — this visually lengthens the leg and adds a retro touch.

If durability for frequent use is important, choose reinforced areas and a tighter knit. For occasional wear and photoshoots, thin decorative styles are suitable.

Stockings are most often worn with a garter belt — it’s important that the belt fits the waist and has adjustable fastenings. Stay-ups are compatible with most dresses but not with every type of garter belt. Accessories include shaping belts, extension clips and silicone inserts for extra hold. When choosing footwear, consider shaft height: tall boot shafts can damage delicate stockings, while pumps or ankle boots with open ankles are safer for fine materials.

Care and storage

Stockings are delicate and require careful handling. Hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent to extend service life. Do not wring or dry on a radiator — heat deforms fibres. For stay-ups, clean the silicone band from creams and body products, otherwise adhesion will weaken. Store stockings folded in a separate pouch or drawer to avoid snags and tangling.
